THE ASH LADS WHO SET OUT TO CONQUER THE WORLD.

Once upon a time there was a Dane who was asked to explain the difference between a Norwegian and a Swede, because the two Scandinavians were quarrelling about who was the smartest, the wisest and the brightest. The Dane looked at his two neighbors and said: "Take your trolls. Swedish trolls are small as rats. They are annoying and bothersome gnomes, and could never kill a man. A Swede, with nothing to be afraid of at home, could always set his sights on conquering the world and the Seven Seas. Norwegian trolls are large as mountains. They have several heads and only one eye to share amongst them. Before Norwegians venture into the world, they must kill their awesome trolls." The Norwegian and the Swede agreed that this was the case and thatÕs how the quarrel came to an end. But the Dane failed to mention the hero of Norwegian folklore: His name is Askeladden Š literally the Ash Lad - so named because he always sits by the fire, poking in the ashes. He is the youngest of three, the dreamer, despised by his parents and brothers. He is also handy and smart and overcomes awe-inspiring obstacles to routinely win the princess and half the kingdom. After years of Swedish world design dominance, a small group of ash lads are getting the better of the last of the bloodcurdling Norwegian trolls. They crammed their finest pieces of furniture into a van and drove to Milan to exhibit at Salone del Mobile under the banner of [norway says]. The design world applauded and wrote in its magazines: "Watch Out Swedes and Danes, here come the Norwegians!" [norway says] has yet to win the princess and half the kingdom, but when it happens the party will undoubtedly be the talk of the land.
