Design RAW, at Totem Gallery
March
8 - April 1, 2001

Where does design originate? From engineers? Scientists? Marketing magicians?
Well, if that's what you believe then designRAW has news for you: Design comes
from designers, from people very much like you. Born out of the culture that
surrounds us and from our experiences within that culture - design and the act
of designing is about how we internalize the things we encounter every day.
Totem Gallery is proud to present designRAW, the freshest act in international
design, with a new installation named Anima. designRAW has never sold a piece
of furniture - in fact they have never designed one - but has still managed to
become the talk of the town at the design fairs in Milan and London. Intending
to educate about design through fun and informative installations, the conceptual
and sexy work explores and questions the nature of the designed object. It demonstrates
a very important but seldom explored aspect of design: the communication and
manipulation of shared values.
Behind every object is an idea; the idea that motivates the product or object
into being. More often than not this idea lingers in the final product. Right
there just off to the side, in the corner or your eye, you catch it! The more
conscious of it you are, the more the idea comes into focus until you can no
longer look at the object without seeing the idea first: the anima.
an·i·ma (noun)[New Latin, from Latin, soul] First appeared 1923: an individual's
true inner self that in the analytic psychology of C. G. Jung reflects archetypal
ideals of conduct; also: an inner feminine part of the male personality -- compare
ANIMUS, PERSONA.
The installation is composed of a series of boxes or dioramas, each of which
contains a thought; the thought behind a particular object. Some boxes ask you
to look, others to touch, but all invite you to participate in understanding
the idea behind the object.
So step forward, roll up your sleeves, reach in, and touch this thing 'design'.
Eight new design objects designed specifically for this show will be launched,
all retailing for less than $20.
At the 2000 Salone del
Mobile in Milan, designRAW received a special recognition
award from the German design magazine Design Report, a publication created to
recognize and encourage the efforts of young designers at the start of their
careers. DesignRAW impresses and touches with the humor and wit with which they
explore the emotional aspects of design.
