Bright New Ideas at Totem: bakerygroup

Lighting, such an essential skill in interior design since the days of Pompeii, has a bright future. From Canada comes the kind of lamp that lights up a room with ambient and soothing illumination just by flicking a switch.

Totem Design, one of the country’s leading showcases for new contemporary design, is proud to present a series of ambient lighting from the bakerygroup called Light Volumes. Elegance, minimalism and simplicity are joined to form this inexpensive range of crescent-shaped subtle luminance that, placed strategically, will soften otherwise stolid homes or offices.

“Light Volumes are minimal shell structures composed of two symbiotic components: a sewn outer shell holds in tension a flexible internal surface,” explains co-founder Anissa Szeto. “Together they produce a double curved rigid volume that provides a unique source of diffused, ambient light.”

"Each screen is a three-dimensional volume created with two interdependent surfaces," adds Szeto’s partner Marcin Padlewski.

Along with mechanical engineer Michel Duvernet, the two architects started bakerygroup with no intention to create lamps. The company started by designing and building bathroom fixtures while incorporating curved sheets of plastic for extraordinary effect.

The fixtures are available at Totem for between $200 to $700.

A warming source of light that can be wall mounted, hung from the ceiling or stand free on the floor or table, hardware can be added to create either a flat or undulating wall stacked several lights high. The fixtures consist of a slim sheet of polypropylene slipped into a sheath thinner and about ten times stronger than silk, made of polyester create an organic feel that gives the appearance of a floating mass of light. It is 100 percent polyester micro-fabric: twill or rip-stop pattern, natural polypropylene sheet, or rubber. Mounted on a single steel rod bent to conform to the underpinnings of the Light, there are no overbearing legs, shelves or mountings to make the Lights look obtrusive in its location.

Light Volumes are a warming and fascinating source of light that emanates simplicity from its form.
