TOTEM ANNOUNCES MARC NEWSON EXHIBITION

NEW YORK, April 7, 1999 - Totem Design Group, New York's mecca for
contemporary furniture design talent will be hosting an exhibition
on Sunday, May 16th 7-10 PM for Marc Newson in conjunction with
Up & Co
and Very Magazine at 257 Church Street. Though only 34 years old,
Marc Newson's influence has been felt around the world. He has
promoted his singular aesthetic vision to powerhouse clients well
known for
their highly refined design sensibilities, including Apple Computer in
America, Idee in Japan and Alessi in Italy.
Newson, a native Australian, spent much of his childhood traveling throughout
Europe and Asia, where he was exposed to the cultural riches the world had
to offer. Setting out to study jewelry design at Sydney College of Art, Newson
quickly realized his future lay in the world of furniture design. Upon graduating
in1984, he was awarded a grant from The Australian Crafts Council to develop
his designs and soon after his work began to be exhibited in prominent galleries
throughout Sydney.
Newson's big break came in 1987 when Terou Kurosaki, president of
the Japanese design giant Idee, put Newson Orgone Lounge and
Felt Chair into production. After living in Japan for four years,
Newson set up shop in Paris in 1991. He completed several new projects
such as the Gluon Chair for Moroso, packaging for Shiseido's Basala
scent and Orgone glassware for Cappellini's Progetto Oggetto. In
1993 Newson was named "Designer of the Year" at
the Salon de Meuble in Paris. Since then Newson has set up shop in
London, where he has moved into the realm of designing interiors,
including offices, bars, restaurants, and even a private jet. Newson's
designs are part of the permanent collections of museums throughout
the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York,
the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris and London's Design
Museum. 1997 saw a retrospective of Newson's work at the Villa
Noailles in France.
Newson's designs reflect the changing aesthetics in today's pre-millennial
world. Using high tech materials and state of the art manufacturing techniques,
Newson's furniture and objects posses a languid sensuality of form held in
check by the rigid geometries of structure. These seemingly conflicting elements
blend together to create objects that are luxurious to the eye yet maintain
an air of high-tech sophistication.
Totem currently represents 40 designers and manufacturers from the
U.S. and Europe, selling their products through wholesale channels
as well as its retail showroom located at 71 Franklin Street in
New York's Tri-Beca. Since opening in 1997, Totem has been the recipient
of numerous awards, including "Best Furniture Design" at
the ICFF in May of 1998 and New York Magazine's "Best Contemporary
Furniture" award in 1998. David Shearer, Totem's founder is
excited to promote the work of Marc Newson, whom Shearer regards
as one of the brightest young stars in the contemporary design world. |
