MICHAEL
SODEAU
DECEMBER 7, 1998
NEW YORK, September 23, 1998-Totem Design
Group, the New York-based retailer of contemporary furniture and
products, today announced that it would host the first US show
for English design stand-out Michael Sodeau on December 7, 1998
."Michael is one of the most talented
and interesting young designers in Britain right now, "said
Totem founder and president David Shearer. "Totem is proud
to be teaming up with such an innovative and forward-looking artist."
Ranging from rosewood and aluminum tables to woven can lights to slip cast
ceramics. Sodeau's first collection is compromised of objects that represent
his ideal of modern living. Manufactured using traditional materials and methods
of production, this first family of furniture is sculptural in form; its pure
and simple aesthetic is derived from traditional crafts-based manufacturing.
Sodeau, 28, trained
at Central St. Martins before making a name for himself with the
English design company
Inflate. After a few years of creating inflatable chairs, ashtrays,
and vases, he decided that he wanted to return to simple, sculptural
designs that used traditional materials in a modern aesthetic.
His solo work has already gained critical acclaim, appearing in
such publications as Wallpaper, Interni, and Elle Décor.
Totem currently represents 40 designers and manufactures form the United States
and Europe, selling their products through wholesale channels as well as its
retail showroom located at 71 Franklin Street in the Tribeca neighborhood of
New York City. The company will be launching DSGN, an editorially-based mail
order catalog, in October.
Sice opening
its flagship store in October 1997, Totem has been the recipient
of numerous awards, including "Best
New Product" at the New York International Gift Fair's Accent
on Design in February, 1998, "Best Contemporary Furniture" award
for 1998. |
