G7
New York
Totem has teamed up with Surface Magazine
and Bombay Sapphire to challenge the notion that good design
and the meaning of "modern" must necessarily be
dictated by European designers and manufacturers. Coming
straight from an off-site showing during the Salone Internationale
del Mobile in Milan 2000, G7, comprised of seven American
upstarts, now present their latest work together for a second
time during the ICFF in New York. Offering an alternative
design paradigm to the one dominant at the large fairs, G7
proposes to steal
some thunder away from the old standards in furniture and
industrial design.

International
Contemporary Furniture Fair
Upholding the standard of extraordinary performance, the 12th edition of the
annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), held May 20-23 at New
York City's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center firmly established itself as the
ultimate market. The expanded base of international exhibitors fueled a highly-charged
four-day comprehensive compendium of programs, exhibits and features that drew
a record-breaking number of qualified attendees. More than 15,000 attendees viewed
the Fair, a solid 11 percent increase over the 1999 edition of the ICFF.

100%
Design
Most trade fairs offer a bewildering mix of the good, the bad and the ugly, with
emphasis on the latter. 100% Design, held in London October 5-8, though, has
higher aspirations. Spanning a broad spectrum of furniture, furnishings and accessories,
the four-day event feels like an upmarket department store.

Walker
Art Center Exhibition
Showcasing
David Design, Karim Rashid, Umbra, Heller, and Kartell. " The
home show examines the intersection of domestic and contemporary
life. Presented in four parts, the exhibition opens with two innovative
Walker projects from the 1940s: a partial recreation of Idea House
II and an update of the Everyday Art Gallery, which surveys
the uses of plastics in today's household products, new design from
Skandinavia, and inventive functional ceramics. |
